Your first visit
When you come for acupuncture, we first learn about each other. You will meet me and get a sense of how we will work together. I will gather some information about why you are seeking help, a health and social/family history, stressors, habits and some more.
Everything we talk about remains confidential. Aside from legal HIPAA requirements, I take very seriously the need for a safe environment in which whatever you tell me is not revealed to anyone else without a good reason and permission from you.
Then I do a short physical exam. If appropriate, I will examine any places that are painful or otherwise a problem. Next I read pulses on the wrists. This is a specialized form of pulse reading. Once I have completed the exam, I can arrive at a diagnosis and proceed with treatment. Usually we go right to treatment at the first visit. Allow about one and a half hours for this first visit including the first treatment.
You don't need a doctor's referral. It is helpful to bring a list of prescription medications.
Wear comfortable clothing. Some acupuncture treatments require access to points on the front or back of the body or thighs or upper arms. I provide clean gowns but you may be more comfortable with clothing that easily allows access.
How will you feel after treatment?
A good treatment will usually leave a person relaxed and feeling overall better. Sometimes people feel sleepy or very tired. These are "side effects" that indicate you are not struggling internally. Very rarely a person will find the symptoms get more intense; this is actually a sign the treatment has reached blockages and you will feel much better once this stage passes. It's like starting to use a muscle that has been injured; it hurts at first. Most of the time, patients get up off my treatment table already feeling better.
Also rarely, a person will have an intense emotional response, often with memories of past trauma. As uncomfortable as this process may be it is an indication that the treatment has reached a deep level and deep healing will follow. I ask patients that if this happens after a visit to call me without waiting for their next appointment. I may be able to help this healing crisis move through to clarity and ease.
Follow up Visits
When you return for follow up, I will ask about how you felt right after the treatment and then for the next few days. I will be interested in symptom changes but also general system indications such as tense or relaxed, better or worse sleep, body changes besides the main symptoms that bring you in for treatment.
Once I get a clear picture of how you are doing right then, we proceed with pulse reading and treatment.
